Small Colony Variants – The Cause Of Chronic Infections

چکیده
Abstract Some microorganisms are characterised by the ability to create specific morphological varieties called Small Colony Variants (SCVs). This characteristic was noted, among others, in Gram-positive cocci, mainly staphylococci, but also Gram-negative bacilli. The properties of that differentiate them from wild-type colonies (mainly their small size) facilitate intracellular survival (e.g. epithelial or endothelial cells) as a result which they can escape host immune response. In this way, SCV forms avoid effects complement components antibodies. They resistance antibiotics, aminoglycoside combination drugs, such trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. above features, important clinical point view, namely size and antibiotic resistance, make one main causes chronic, latent recurrent infections difficult not only diagnose, treat. According literature, various be isolated systemic organs therefore different materials blood, bones, soft tissues). Staphylococcus aureus often patients with cystic fibrosis osteomyelitis. paper presents characteristics relevance unique form bacteria.

Staphylococcus aureus small colony variants in diabetic foot infections
Background : Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is one of the major pathogens causing chronic infections. The ability of S. aureus to acquire resistance to a diverse range of antimicrobial compounds results in limited treatment options, particularly in methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). A mechanism by which S. aureus develops reduced susceptibility to antimicrobials is through the formation...
متن کاملThe role of small-colony variants in failure to diagnose and treat biofilm infections in orthopedics.
Biomaterial-related infection of joint replacements is the second most common cause of implant failure, with serious consequences. Chronically infected replacements cannot be treated without removal of the implant, as the biofilm mode of growth protects the bacteria against antibiotics. This review discusses biofilm formation on joint replacements and the important clinical phenomenon of small-...

Staphylococcus aureus remains a versatile and dangerous pathogen. Small-colony variants (SCVs) of S. aureus are a naturally occurring sub-population, first described nearly 100 years ago. These variants, of which there are different classes, grow slowly and have many atypical characteristics thought to be due to defective electron transport, and include minute colony forms. SCVs have been isola...
متن کاملClinical and molecular characteristics of infections with CO2-dependent small-colony variants of Staphylococcus aureus.
Most Staphylococcus aureus small-colony variants (SCVs) are auxotrophs for menadione, hemin, or thymidine but rarely for CO(2). We conducted a prospective investigation of all clinical cases of CO(2)-dependent S. aureus during a 3-year period. We found 14 CO(2)-dependent isolates of S. aureus from 14 patients that fulfilled all requirements to be considered SCVs, 9 of which were methicillin res...

Intestinal staphylococcal small colony variants: a cause of medically unexplained physical symptoms? I rritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is often associated with food intolerances, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue (1), a symptom cluster commonly denoted as medically unexplained physical symptoms. We here present three cases which may give new thoughts concerning the etiology of the condition. Case...
